Lords…Johannesburg…Barbados….???
Sri Lankan was worthy winners of the 9th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup where the last two champions (India & Pakistan) vanished in the first round of the competition….Flabbergasted…!!!
I have always adhered to this fact that the team reaching the finals of the competition along with the Aussies can be considered as the worthy winners of the world cup. So reaching the finals is what the other teams should aim at. This world cup had a lot of drama associated with it, all for wrong reasons. The killing of the Pakistani coach Bob Woolmer was quite unfortunate and I guess the cops should try to bring the wrongdoer to justice as soon as possible, whoever it may be.
How the semi-finalist major Teams faired…..
Aussies: They won their fourth cup and the third consecutive time ….its as simple as that…and they are there to RULE.
Sri Lanka: No one would have given them the chance of reaching the final, but I always thought that they had a balanced team led by an aggressive and imaginative captain, unlike ours (meanwhile I am an Indian). They did fairly well and can be proud of their achievement.
New Zealand: They performed reasonably well, guess after the 92 world cup, this was by far their best performance in the world cup. Again they had a cool captain who led quite brilliantly.
South Africa: They choked again, nothing new…and I believe that they are not that good side as they are though to be…as far as I am concerned, South Africa Sucks…They still believe that they are on-par with the Aussies and go gaga over their 434 run chase (as we do of winning the Natwest Series recently).Come on Africans, forget the past…live in the present and you guys are not that good as you think you are …and somebody please let this fact be known to Barry Richards and Pat Symcox.
I could have written about the remaining teams who made up the numbers, but don't want to spend time on those mediocre performing (non) teams, rather I could spend time on some of the best performers of this world cup.
For me Matthew Hayden was class apart (no disrespect to the Pigeon). He sustained his good form through out the series and for me he was the best batsman of the tournament. His innings in the super eights against the South Africans was absolutely out of this world. His shots reached the fence in a jiffy.
I feel privileged to watch some of the individual and some teams dominate their respective sport for in the present era…here are a few (Readers are welcome to add their own and differ with the ones chosen by me)
· Michael Schumacher
· Pete Sampras/Roger Federer (I still admire King Pete)
· Tiger Woods
· Sachin Tendulkar (Up till 2003), Warne & Murali to a certain extent
· & of course The Aussie Cricket Team

Meanwhile, Lasith Malinga was adjudged the sexiest player of this edition of the tournament beating the likes of Kevin Pertersien, Freddie, Dan Vettori and our very own MS Dhoni and the rest…..
To sum up it up, the Australian were worthy winners of the 9th ICC Cricket World Cup and it would be quite unfortunate that we will not be able to watch some of the stars perform again on the Cricket field
The next big thing that I am awaiting is not the next India-Australian series or the next Ashes, but I am waiting for the release of one of the most eagerly anticipated movie…..."Aap Ka Suroor - The Moviee, The Real Luv Story" (Thats the full name of the movie starring Himesh Reshammiyya)

yup Auisses just dominate the game and even if they are arrogant its with a reason.....
Speaking of legends I do miss Schumi a lot..is a little weird rooting for Kimi after having sweared at him last season but then i am a Ferrari loyalist.
Few other legends
Andre Agassi
Vishwanathan Anand
The end of the 9th ICC World cup drew curtains on a few distinguished careers
Brain Lara
Glen
As for Himesh and AAp ka Saroor i beleive the movie has 21 songs....i am just dying in anticipation ;-)
tear,
agassi and anand...hmmm...i guess not in the same class as the rest as they never dominated their sport at any time, they defenitely won but never were invincible...i guess u liked them and thats your opinion....no probs.
I have heard the new cricket league thats gonna be launched will have all these Ex cricketers and wud be played in a 20-20 format...wud be fun.
and for the 21 songs in the movie...WOW...i guess i need to present an audio cd to KD(Thinshark)..cos he is just ardent fan of HR...:)

you missed jordan, maradona intentionally?

My additions-
1.Steve waugh and Dravid
2. Warney and Lara
3. Boris Becker

5. Diego Maradona
6. Brazil and Aussies
and a many...
Having named a few I have admired and idolized, I would slightly tilt towards heroes in a team game. Simply because you got to align your personal goals with the team and at the same time handle peer pressure and remain a great team man. Unless there is a mateship within team players which extend to other interests beyond cricket, they cannot succeed.Thats an awesome concept.
Though warne ,lara, becker and Mcenroe continue to amaze me because of their sheer brilliance and the excitement they could bring whether they lose or win, I am more amazed at how steve waugh and dravid improved from how they started through sheer bloody mindedness and mental strength.
I am just recovering from Steve waughs Autobio - which in my opinion is one of the best books for cricket fans ever.

Apologies KD...just missed out on Jordan, though he was admired by many other champs from other sport.
Then I guess we should include Jan-Ove-Waldner, Jansher/Jahangir Khan from their respective sport.
Maradona was absolutely brilliant...but never caught my imagination
Why not include The Undertaker; he has been there for ages…hasn’t he?
Venkat,
I guess these are your personal favourites; Becker was flamboyant and energetic but never dominated the game. If you include him then I ought to have Stefan Edberg...hehe
Dravid....hmmmm....NO.....mental strenght, hardworking etc are all ok, but he never
led the team to any great heights, infact he brought us to greater lows
Steve Waugh a great fighter...

Yup. Becker's my personal fav.
Starting off topic - in ref to your response to the previous posts comments.
I have been following every intnl match since 2001.
Well , I cannot quite understand your dislike for dravid.(If it is personal and not for cricketing reasons- I will not question it).
If it is for cricketing reasons then - for the "taken to great hts"
He has been the main reason for all our overseas victories and of course ones at home too. Trentbridge, Adelaide, Rawalpindi, WestIndies etc
He played gems in each of this.
I guess you might have a more balanced view if you look at the statistics.
Though off topic, It is completely unfair to judge dravid with in 2 years.
Ganguly was fortunate that he had Dravid, sachin and laxman peaking at the same time which enabled kumble and other bowlers to finish off games.
Tendulkar and Sehwag - completely off color, Ganguly- not anywhere close to pre 2000.
Kaif - no where , dhoni - big failure outside India.
If dravid tries to drop these people and go fo young blood - the whole of Bengal and Bombay will go against him.
Thats not his mistake.
When Ganguly took over(2000) , the only way India could go was up.
Though I have admiration for some things that he did, he has been a big failure as a cricket player (for the promise he showed till 2000- check statsguru in cricinfo - You can try every combination psble to show how mediocre ganguly has been) which is an absolute necessity if you have to be a captain. You cannot just show gestures and dance topless and expect to be in the team.
Let us see if he can perform significantly for dravid as dravid did for Ganguly against quality teams.
Well, its your blog and views and I am not questioning it. However, if you could support your views about dravid's "failure " and Ganguly's "succcess "with more facts, It would justify your views more.
Sorry- for such a long one and offtopic comments.
Oh God to seeUndertaker in that list looks like ur an adrent fan of WWF or Should i say WWE
@Venkat... fantastic mate... nice to see clarity of thought when it's almost fashionable to single out somebody.
not going to add as i'm a dravid fan and anything i say would sound biased.
Venkat & others..
Dude, I certainly have nothing cricketing against dravid (best contemporary test batsman for India), but I guess you are giving unfair due to dravid and you are kind of down playing the efforts of ganguly.I agree and also believe that dravid is best technically equipped batsman around, but I am sorry, technique is not every thing in this game. You need characters like ganguly to have positive influence in the team.
Why ganguly was required for the world cup...that’s my question to you...??? It was not because Calcutta wanted him in the team neither was it because of the parliament, it was because the as a team did not do a damn in the past two years under the Greg/Dravid regime. I donno who has to be blamed for it, It’s for you to decide.
When ganguly took over the captaincy, he DEMANDED for certain players in whom he had faith and stood by them when they were down, why the F*#$ didn’t dravid do that and recalled Ganguly for the world cup???
I guess he was in the position and had the backing of the board to take such decisions. He was scared, that if he performed shoddily in the world cup (without ganguly), then the entire nation would have pounced on him.
His decision to have Sachin play at number 4 was atrocious…how the hell cud you ask the best bat to come at number 4 forgetting all the contributions he had done was at the opening slot. Where has Irfan’s swing gone, where has Sehwag’s arrogance gone, where has Dravid, the Wall gone……? To be fair on all we have lost more than we have gained under Dravid.
As for records as suggested by you please visit this link and it’s for you to decide if Ganguly was that awful, who didn’t deserve a place in the team…forget his CAPTAINCY

A guy came to Fight Club for the first time his ass was a wad of cookie dough. After a few weeks he was carved out of wood
can we talk about the concept of bench strength plz... and how important it is in any game
My point simply is Dravid deserves more time with out unwanted comparisons with Ganguly.
I think he is doing okay with the talent he has been given.
The people who we thought were going to replace or step up with better performances have failed terribly.
1. Sehwag
2. Kaif
3. Zaheer
4. harbhajan
5. To some extent Yuvraj in Tests
6. Nehra
7.Dinesh mongia
Added to that
Tendulkar has been pathetic off late.
These were the people who were grromed and supported and simply have not produced the goods.
It ultimately boils down to the attitude of the players and after a certain level , you are on your own.
I think Dravid is doing a good job with the other new youngsters and hopefully they produce the goods in 3 years and not let us down like the people above.
So the only way these people could be made to perform was by putting them out of their comfort zones.
None of these old farts came close to taking up the challenge.
Where is irfan's inswing? Thats a techincal problem and the only person who can rectify that is Pathan.
It is absolutely laughable to say that Dravid and greg chappell were the reasons he lost swing.??
To me it does not make sense.
So when Greg came in, he thought these above mentioned were going to perform consistently based on their promise which did not happen.
It is simply notpossible to win a WC grooming new people in 2 years.
Hence they had to go back to the effed up old farts and not surprisingly we lost because of them.
Do you need more explanation?
slight correction venkat...
it's not just 'to some extent' when talking about yuvraj and test... he's been outright miserable... matter of fact, ehe doesn't deserve to be called a test player
what time are we talking about venkat?? if ur talking about the time since the big bang then you're right.. dravid deserves more time.. probably till the next big bang..
Till we could form a team with good bench strength with due importance given to physical and match fitness and good attitude.
It is not impossible, the key is to have a long term vision like th aussies in 1987 and professionalism.
Mr. Fite club-
It feels like Becker -Edberg fights all over again.
Nice job da-Keep the ink flowing.
Ohh damn i have missed out on soo much action looks like lots of THOUGHTS have been exchanged here but i guess its never too late to catch up!!!
Venkat,
See in India there ought to be comparisons with the previous captains and we have to live with. If you compare other skills then why not the captaincy. I am not for any replacement of the captian, but dravid has not given any confidence (to me atleast) that his way of thinking will change in future...he has some rigid thoughts, which he is not willing to come out of.
He has not used the pool of talent to his advantage and that’s bad captaincy. When he took over players you mentioned were performing and why have they suddenly become non-performers...???I guess that’s because of the fear of failure that has crept in their minds (remember cricket is played between once ears). So I don’t really feel that their fault. They were not handled properly.
Regarding irfan's swing I agree that its his problem and he has to come out of it, but what about him being projected at number 3 for more that a year and then coming to open the bowling...and now he is no where. he wasn’t handled properly, and now he is neither a bowler nor a batsman forget the all-rounder.
How could you say that Venkat,i respect your cricketing acumen....2 year's i guess enough time to groom and nurture any cricketer. People like Clarke,Hussey,Symonds all flourished in the past 2 years.
And Edberg was much better than Becker...:)

Vishwanathan Anand for captaincy...
who better than a chess player as a strategeist and a man manager?
He's by far the best chess player any cricket playing nation has produced to date. He could use this fact to charge the team up as well.
Considering ability with the bat, ball or in the field isn't a criteria for captaincy, it's a fair deal right?
anyways, jokes apart, i guess i'm being a bit of a fence sitter here... but how about a young captain who plays both versions of the game?
one of the 2 keepers probably (though dhoni is tragic overseas)
Always wondered why there haven't been too many wicket keeper captains... it's probably the best position in the field to be captaining from.
and follow calcutta in 1 aspect... more seamer friendly pitches in the domestic circuit plz... and i mean ONLY 1... everything else in their cricketing/politics scene is to be seen from afar with disgust.
joining the tennis bandwagon...
u guys checked out fedex vs nadal? what exactly happened there?
and gag now you got to tilt towards fed... pistol pete never had any classy clay court opponent, but never made a mark on clay. (leaving a mark behind as a player who didn't make a mark isn't to be considered as anything apart from cheap humor)
Venkat i know its kinde day toa late in th brig up the topic again when already so much has been said and told but my view is simple that as a captain a person needs to be dynamic and lead from the front maybe i will draw out a lot of criticism for what I am going to say not only from you but also from KD, please understnad I do not over rule Dravid's authority as a batsman but as an INnovative Cricketer, he does not have the aggression or teh zest that is required of the captain, when in world cup India was doing bad against the Srilankans and Dravid had stooped shoulders and down eyes indicating it was all over without even a fair fight, it was ganguly who kept racing to the bowlers, yelling at the feilders, looking at Dravid's face one wished he was taken off the feild to rid him of the trouble of just standing there!!! Th only fire i saw out of the guy during the World Cup was when he got up on his two feet to acknowledge the Century of Sehwag against Bermuda, why not the same aggression for performance of each player, why not the onus for other performance with the same flamboyance.......One Captain that I thought despite his short term was Ajay Jadeja!!! now i know this is going to raise a few brows but one has to admit that he had that spirit to lift the team and ensure everyone was into it till the last ball was bowled.....
By the way KD no reports on EPL!!!!
fine... i agree...
i was disappointed during the lanka match... but it was only during the run chase, when he had a forlorn look and decided to just go after the bowling without really bothering with the 'keep the match alive till the last burst' approach.
if you take a closer look at his captaincy in the first innings, you'd know what a strategeist is...
if you can get hold of the highlights package or something, you'd notice even the commentators praising the intelligence involved. Not letting the batsmen settle to a rhythm whatsoever.
and as for aggro, he's the first captain i've come across who's backing up a raw pacer (VRV) relentlessly, so he can give it to the opposition... the odd good performance by a half quick dude isn't enough, you need a dude who can force the batsmen back.
my shoutout is about looking for aggro in strategy, not what ganguly used to do... he was just about getting under the opponents' skin like say dominic cork.
and why is everybody trying to play catchup with the aussies? why isn't a captain like hansie croje worth it? why the steaming, jumping about, liable to lose his cool captain as the solution.
remember if you try following a system that works for somebody else, you needn't be as succesful as that somebody else.
anyways, me off... like i said, i'm a dravid fan and hence anything i say would sound biased in his favour.
and as for EPL... nah... i find the game real annoying... everytime i watch it, i see some dude fouling some other dude in the midfield and letting his teammates fall back. else there's be the longballs. tragic stuff after a while.
you really want to watch football, check out the la liga or the serie a, now that's good stuff. all the strat, the time on the ball letting you come up with real easy on the eyes stuff.
and when the italians defend, they defend deep and defend fair, they're just damn good at it. unlike EPL where all u can see is a crunching tackle in the midfield to avert immediate danger.
Gattuso on Ronaldo... and nobody had an answer, one of the best matches i've seen.
heard that recently EA Sports removed the characters of Tendulkar and Dhoni in the latest version of their Computer Cricket game

Heard that recently EA Sports removed the characters of Tendulkar and Dhoni from their latest Computer Cricket game
Apologies for the delay in reply. Was a kind of busy with work...anyways I am back...
KD,Young Captain...hmmm...so you too feel that time has come to put in trust in someone else...or else you wouldn’t have suggested this...and I feel you are impressed with Karthik
But as far as I am concerned I feel he is too new to captain the side...and feel he hasn’t done that many greater deeds to be a permanent member of the side (even dhoni isn’t).He has done reasonably well and shown good temperament/technique, but I guess he needs more time and should dawn the gloves in longer version of the game and allow VVS to be part as a specialist batsman. We just can’t have two keepers in the side and don’t tell me that MSD/DK are a better bat than VVS…VVS has been treated shabbily
For me the next captain is Yuvi...though he does not play test cricket on a regular basis, but then he is not given chances regularly. I guess when these old horses go back, its then the likes of these "youngsters" would get their chances...what say???
Tear, you hit the nail on the head…Dravid is not inspiring enough...And my friend KD has to understand that backing these bowlers like VRV, Munaf is no good, they never last a series and most of them get injured even before the series starts.
Lets us see if at all these so called fast bowlers last 1 year in the international arena from today...
And regarding EPL…not much into it…but watch world cups…and love the Italians…KD do u remember the T which I bought from a mall in pune….I was the only sporting the Italy T-Shirt and the rest …amused and bemused Brazilian fans…hahaha…I finally had the last laugh
Have been following the Italians since 90’s…Roberto Baggio/Salvatore Schillaci /Maldini/Baresi era…It was nice to see AC Milan beat Liverpool
And FedEx was just ok against Nadal in that final…Nadal was looking worn-out after 81 straight wins on clay…lets see what happens at the French Open.
Meanwhile there is planned showdown between Pistol Pete and Federer in December 2007.Just can’t wait for that… I hope it’s on grass…

Well GAG--
Till about 1992 I accept that I idolised becker because he was exciting. What according to me made becker a great was the kind of improvement he made from a great serve and volleyer(not as graceful as Edberg's)to a more than good baseline player challenging the likes of Agassi consistently and sometimes sampras(culminating in a Aus open win 10 years after his first GS). Again to me, he was the best ever indoor tennis player ever.
I don't have to talk about head to head with Edberg.Becker wins hands down.
The fact that I would have liked Boris irrespective of all these is another issue.
Coming to Cricket, this is exactly what I would look in a player or a captain. How you started and how much you improved.(I can totally accept players tapering off in the end)A good understanding of situational statistics would be a proof.
To me Ganguly(would love to say Tendulkar but I would not) does not qualify as a player and as a captain. Dravid does.
May be Dravid made mistakes, but he is bound to improve and currently he is the only one who can inspire people to bigger deeds (who want to get inspired)based on this.
As of dravid not "looking" inspiring. Its again your perception and I would go with KD on that.
I have always thought his body language has been tough and lacked nonsense.
As for yuvraj(or sehwag) being a captan, he does not know how to manage himself. He does not undersatnd his game and not stable. He will not realize his potential(just like ganguly failed to as a captain).
My instincts say that Karthik and Raina fall in to dravid's category.
Thats for their future to decide.
Clark, Hussey, Symonds.
The facts really are that Symonds started playing in 1998. Hussey has had more than 10 years of experience in the most competitive form of cricket.(Aussie First class). He is 31 or 32.
Clark did well though he was not fantastic which is more than acceptable.
He has always been marked as an awsome talent, so he better perform.
India has not had one such player in the last couple of years.
Lets be honest about Pathan, He has not done that well (even in his "peak" ) against stronger opponents. His best were against bangladesh and Zim.
I personally feel you are comparing apples and oranges .
If it is our mentality to compare people and it does not do any good to anyone -what is the point in clinging to it. Just because its a part of our culture.
As for the other side of the coin, Ganguly brought a certain freshness to the team and removed to an extent the zonal selection policies.
I still maintain that he was the best person at that time and dravid is the best person for the current gen and there is absolutely no point in comparing and putting the other person down.
